In November 2021, the DreamGirls Academy celebrates our 10th year anniversary! Can you believe it? What an amazing journey it has been. Through the organisation’s various initiatives, just over 1200 girls and young women have been empowered.
When we started DreamGirls, we set out to start a movement and build a legacy of educating and empowering girls and young women so that they are able to raise the standard of their lives, positively change the trajectory of their families’ lives and contribute back to their wider communities. Our vision for the organisation has always been for it to be led by a group of rising young female leaders and after 10 years we realise that we are not that young anymore, so the time has come for us to hand over the baton.
On 18 September 2020 at our first virtual alumni event, the founding directors (aka the mother board, as we’re so fondly known) announced that we would appoint a new executive team from the mentee alumni network who would lead the organisation through its next phase. We received 27 compelling applications and went through a rigorous interview process over three months. As you can imagine, it was a tough process as we have so many talented and passionate servant leaders in this organisation but eventually we selected a team of five new leaders. Thus, we proudly introduce you to the new DreamGirls leadership team; Thoko Mahlangu, Mmabatho Krom, Eunice Mashifane, Nkhesani Mahlekisi and Koketso Mokoena. Each one of these ladies have come through one of the DreamGirls programmes over the past decade.
Over the next 6-12 months, the mother board will mentor and guide them in managing all aspects of the organisations so that by 2022 they are able to manage the organisation on their own and chart the way forward. For the foreseeable future, the mother board will remain as advisory board members. Starting, building and leading the DreamGirls Academy has been deeply transformative life changing journey for all three of the remaining founding members and we have no doubt that it will be the same for the new leadership team.
We want to take this opportunity to THANK every single founding director, advisory board member, mentor, committee member, speaker, sponsor, partner, donor, mentee, parent, family and friends who’ve showed up to support this movement. Please join us in congratulating the new team and wishing them the very best for this significant role that they have chosen to step up to.
We also would like to encourage you to continue supporting and following our journey on social media for ongoing updates.
Yours in Sisterhood,
The Mother Board
